Designed to Help Solve a Healthcare Shortage

This project was driven by a regional healthcare shortage and rising medical costs, challenges that highlight the urgent need for locally trained healthcare providers. MOA ARCHITECTURE designed the building to foster collaboration and interaction, with shared circulation and collaboration spaces that double as study areas. The exterior respects the scale and material palette of neighboring campus buildings, while the interior prioritizes flexible learning environments, including group study rooms, breakout spaces, and adaptable Interprofessional Education (IPE) areas for hands-on clinical simulations, mock triage events, and community health initiatives.

Corridor with a built‑in seating alcove featuring patterned upholstery, small round tables with wood chairs, wood‑pattern flooring, a slatted wood ceiling with linear lighting, and adjacent glass‑fronted rooms.
Classroom with rows of tables and task chairs facing a projection screen, a large whiteboard, carpet tile flooring, a ceiling with recessed lighting, and full‑height windows along one side of the room.
Building Capacity for Better Healthcare Across the Region

By providing modern laboratories, classrooms, and flexible clinical spaces, the St. Mary’s SCL Medical Education Center enables CMU to expand health sciences enrollment and graduate professionals equipped to serve Western Colorado. The building supports student-faculty collaboration, enhances the learning experience, and allows for innovative interprofessional training. Beyond academics, the facility’s flexible design accommodates community partnerships, including sports medicine clinics and public health events, ultimately strengthening healthcare access and quality across the region.
