Rawlins Elementary School

Rawlins, Wyoming
Three Schools Become One Community

Rawlins Elementary School brings together three former community schools into a single, cohesive K–5 campus designed to serve approximately 1,000 students and 135 faculty and staff. Located just off I-80 in Rawlins, Wyoming, the 96,300-square-foot facility provides a modern learning environment that strengthens educational continuity, enhances collaboration, and reduces long-term maintenance costs for Carbon County School District No. 1. Organized into three distinct learning communities, the school offers flexible, age-appropriate educational spaces supported by abundant daylight, renewable materials, and passive solar design strategies.

Shaped by the Land and Sky of Rawlins

The design draws deeply from the region’s natural landscape and the powerful environmental forces that shape it. Rawlins is known for its dramatic geologic uplift formations and expansive views of Elk Mountain—features that directly influenced the school’s architectural expression. The building’s massing, orientation, and exterior forms mirror the surrounding terrain, while carefully framed apertures capture landmark vistas and bring the outdoors into daily learning.

Responding to the site’s pervasive Wyoming winds, the team shaped the building and its courtyards to create protected outdoor zones and comfortable transitions between inside and outside. The use of natural light, earthy materials, and sustainable practices reinforces a connection to place and grounds the school in its high-plains context. Each of the three learning communities reflects these design themes, creating smaller “schools within a school” that feel both grounded and inviting.

Transforming Education in Carbon County

The new Rawlins Elementary School transforms the educational experience for students and teachers across the district. By uniting three previously separate communities, the school strengthens collaboration among educators, increases operational efficiency, and creates more equitable learning environments for all students.

Its thoughtful organization supports each grade band with age-appropriate spaces while still offering shared resources—such as commons areas, specialty classrooms, and outdoor learning opportunities—that cultivate a sense of connectedness. Sustainable design strategies reduce energy consumption and operational costs, while expansive natural light and views enhance well-being and student engagement. Rawlins Elementary School stands as a long-term investment in academic excellence, community cohesion, and the future of learning in Carbon County.
