Pueblo District 60 East & Centennial High Schools
As the centerpiece of Pueblo School District 60’s 2019 bond initiative, the East and Centennial High Schools prototype project represents a transformative step in PK-12 education in one of Colorado’s largest districts. Developed as part of a comprehensive Facilities Master Plan led by MOA ARCHITECTURE in partnership with HGF Architects, the project replaced two aging high schools with modern, flexible learning environments. By using a prototype approach, the District achieved significant efficiencies in both design and construction while addressing the long-term needs of students, faculty, and the community.

The design of these high schools is rooted in the philosophy that learning can happen anywhere. Traditional classrooms are complemented by group-learning areas, breakout spaces, and flexible Career & Technical Education zones that can adapt to evolving programs. Community connection was a guiding principle: each school features a welcoming entry with a community room and “heritage gallery” to celebrate school history and serve as a gathering space for local groups. The architectural language balances a modern aesthetic with Pueblo’s characteristic masonry, creating buildings that feel contemporary yet grounded in their place. This approach ensures that the schools serve as both educational facilities and civic anchors within the community.
The new East and Centennial High Schools provide students and educators with flexible, future-ready learning environments that support academic achievement, creativity, and collaboration. The prototype design allows specialized spaces to grow and evolve with changing educational priorities, while community-focused areas strengthen the connection between schools and the broader Pueblo population. Delivered concurrently under the District’s bond initiative, these facilities set a new standard for high school design in the region, demonstrating how thoughtful planning, community engagement, and adaptable design can shape the future of education.
