Arrupe Jesuit High School

Denver, Colorado
Building Opportunity in Northwest Denver

Arrupe Jesuit High School is a mission-driven institution committed to serving students with limited economic resources in northwest Denver. As the school prepared to expand its capacity and elevate its educational environment, MOA ARCHITECTURE partnered with leaders to design a transformative addition and renovation that enhances daily life on campus while honoring the school's deep roots in the community. The project increases enrollment capacity from 400 to 500 students and supports a wider range of academic, administrative, and athletic programs. With a landlocked site and an aging 1950s building, the design solution combines strategic new construction with thoughtful reuse to create a more functional, safe, and inspiring campus for students and staff.

Size

Scope

  • Renovation
  • Addition
High school gymnasium with a full basketball court, wood flooring featuring a large school logo at center court, blue and gray acoustic wall panels, multiple backboards, and an exposed structural ceiling with suspended lighting.
Tiered collaboration area with built‑in stadium‑style seating and round floor cushions, adjacent stairs with metal handrails, overhead ceiling panels with integrated linear lighting, and nearby lounge tables and chairs.
A New Front Door for a Growing School

The design team drew inspiration from Arrupe Jesuit’s mission—rooted in opportunity, community, and holistic student development. Every decision sought to reinforce the school’s identity and support its unique work-study model. The three-story addition replaces the former rectory site and creates a new front door for the campus, improving visibility, accessibility, and security. Inside, programs are intentionally stacked to maximize efficiency and flexibility: chemistry labs and work-study spaces at the ground level, a full-size gymnasium above, and fitness and administrative spaces on the top floor. The renovation phase respects and revitalizes the historic character of the original school building, preserving its distinctive sawtooth roof while reconfiguring interior spaces for modern teaching and learning. Creativity played a central role, as the team navigated site constraints, ran weekly Design Advisory Group meetings, engaged neighborhood stakeholders, and worked through a complex rezoning process with city agencies.

Science classroom with lab tables and stools, wall‑mounted cabinetry, demonstration counter with sink, interactive display screen, fume hood, and a life‑size anatomical model.
Student commons area with modular lounge seating in blue and green tones, circular tables, wood‑slat ceiling panels with integrated linear lighting, and adjacent glass‑front entry area.
Investing in Students and Community for the Long Term

This expansion strengthens Arrupe Jesuit’s ability to serve its students—creating spaces that support future academic growth, enhance wellness, expand athletic opportunities, and reinforce community presence. New labs elevate the sciences program, updated administrative spaces improve day-to-day operations, and the addition of a modern gym and fitness facilities broadens student experiences. With guidance from Group14’s energy study, the project also improves long-term sustainability and building performance, aligning with Denver’s evolving energy code requirements. Most importantly, the project ensures Arrupe Jesuit High School can continue its long-standing mission: empowering students to thrive academically, professionally, and personally while remaining a vibrant, supportive anchor in northwest Denver.
