Mountain Song Community School

Colorado Springs, Colorado
A Century of Learning Renewed

Set in the heart of Colorado Springs, the century-old building that now houses Mountain Song Community School has long been a place of learning and connection. Once a traditional elementary school, the building has evolved into a vibrant, Waldorf-inspired public charter school serving students from kindergarten through eighth grade. With the support of a 2023–24 BEST (Building Excellent Schools Today) Grant, Mountain Song partnered with MOA ARCHITECTURE and Fransen Pittman to undertake a major renovation and addition. The project balances preservation and renewal, honoring the history of the building while creating a safe, accessible, and inspiring environment for today’s learners.

Designing Spaces That Nurture the Whole Child

From the outset, the design team grounded every decision in the school’s core values: Wonder, Truth, Beauty, and Goodness. These guiding principles informed how spaces were arranged, how natural light was introduced, and how materials and colors were selected to support the Waldorf educational approach. Working closely with school leadership, the team sought to create spaces that nurture the whole child—places that feel warm, human-centered, and connected to nature.

Key enhancements include the addition of a secure vestibule, a new kitchen and cafeteria with a teaching component, expanded classrooms and special education spaces, and significant accessibility improvements such as a new elevator and wheelchair lift. Each component reflects a thoughtful response to the needs of students, teachers, and families.

Building Safety, Connection and Opportunity

The transformed building empowers Mountain Song Community School to fully realize its mission while preparing the school for decades of growth. Students now have access to healthy meals through the National School Lunch Program, supported by a kitchen designed to connect curriculum with cultivation through the Agricultural Arts program. Accessibility improvements ensure all students and visitors can navigate the building safely and independently, while upgraded security and communication systems strengthen campus-wide safety and responsiveness.

This project supports not just the functional needs of the school, but the values of a community deeply rooted in connection, creativity, and care. Mountain Song Community School now has a learning environment that honors its past, supports its present, and uplifts the generations to come.
