Dr. Justina Ford Elementary School

Littleton, Colorado
A New Standard in Student-Centered Design

Dr. Justina Ford Elementary School is a two-story, student-centered learning environment designed to foster curiosity, collaboration, and connection to nature. Serving Littleton Public Schools, the facility integrates flexible classroom spaces with breakout areas, a central media center, and thoughtfully designed outdoor learning environments. Set on a compact site, the school accommodates play areas for multiple age groups while negotiating critical site constraints, including an easement for City of Aurora water supply mains.

Biophilic Design Shapes Young Minds

The design of the school is inspired by biophilia and natural themes, creating a welcoming, healthy, and engaging environment for students. A generous wood-look overhang marks the entry, setting the tone for the nature-inspired interior. The building’s curved circulation spine, which houses the media center, incorporates wood finishes, nature-inspired colors and textures, and custom casework “nooks” shaped like rocks and trees. Clerestory windows at the second story enhance daylighting, reinforcing the connection to the outdoors. Each classroom wing draws inspiration from Colorado’s diverse biomes, using colors, graphics, and themes to create immersive learning spaces that encourage exploration and collaboration.

Learning Environments That Adapt and Inspire

Dr. Justina Ford Elementary School supports Littleton Public Schools’ commitment to student-centered education by providing flexible, adaptable learning environments. The breakout spaces and biome-themed classrooms facilitate team teaching, small-group learning, and seamless movement throughout the school day. Outdoor learning areas and age-appropriate play zones further enrich the student experience, fostering both physical activity and engagement with the natural environment. By blending thoughtful design with educational best practices, the school provides a vibrant, inspiring setting where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
