As specification manager I use my critical thinking skills learned as English Lit major, working for a GC and practicing architecture to help our teams select the best materials and products for all MOA projects.

My Why

I returned to school for architecture after working for a GC, where I discovered that I enjoyed the technical problem-solving of construction but wanted a career where I could make a difference in people’s lives. K–12 schools found me at the end of my first year of graduate school. At the year-end AIAS event, Paul Hutton asked my studio professor who her best student had been over the past year. She pointed to me across the room. Paul was able to find me a short while later and offered me a position helping with K–12 school projects over the coming summer.

Schools fit the bill of making a difference in people’s lives and became the primary focus of my work for the next 15 years. After advancing into a PM role, it became time to take a short break from architecture. Even after that break and a desire to change roles, MOA welcomed me back as a Specification Manager. Appreciating each person for their individual skills is what makes MOA so outstanding. Even in a behind-the-scenes position, I know my work at MOA is making a difference in people’s lives.

Favorite MOA Project

My favorite MOA project is Prospect Valley Elementary School. I love seeing the kids play in the circle windows at the entrance—it’s such a simple design element, but it brings so much life and joy to the building. Watching students interact with the space as they arrive makes the school feel playful, welcoming, and truly designed with children in mind.
