Pathways Hospice Inpatient Care Center
The Pathways Hospice Inpatient Care Center in Fort Collins is a first-of-its-kind, stand-alone facility for the not-for-profit provider, offering comprehensive hospice and palliative care for families across Northern Colorado. Situated alongside the organization’s administration center, the facility brings medical care, family support, and community engagement together under one roof. Every aspect of the design—from patient rooms to communal areas—balances first-class healthcare with a comforting, home-like environment, ensuring dignity, privacy, and support for patients, families, and staff alike.

“Pathways Hospice Center is my favorite project at MOA. It is rooted in a powerful mission and guided by an incredible staff whose insight shaped every aspect of the design. The team carefully studied the needs of various user groups, ensuring that both the functionality of the spaces and the overall aesthetic would be meaningful and supportive for those who experience the building every day.
Designed in the midst of the COVID pandemic, the project required adaptability and resilience. The team pivoted quickly to incorporate an isolation wing, adjust material selections, and navigate ongoing supply shortages. Despite these challenges, the project was successfully delivered and stands as a testament to collaboration, flexibility, and mission-driven design.”
The design for Pathways Hospice synthesizes three guiding principles: a healthcare environment that provides all the comforts of home; a sacred space that honors life while elevating the importance of death; and a community-centered institution that supports private, intense experiences of grief. Extensive programming and user experience mapping informed the design, allowing the team to carefully address the needs of patients, families, and staff. Natural materials such as wood and stone, along with abundant daylighting, create a warm and approachable exterior, while interior spaces—including family rooms, a café, garden, and reflection areas—support comfort, connection, and healing. Patient rooms incorporate custom headwall systems that seamlessly conceal medical equipment, reinforcing the home-like atmosphere.
By providing a dedicated inpatient facility, Pathways Hospice can deliver high-quality care in its own specialized environment for the first time. Families benefit from spaces that allow privacy, reflection, and togetherness, while staff can provide care in an optimized, functional setting. The facility’s thoughtful design, including negative pressure patient rooms and touchless fixtures influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, ensures safety while maintaining warmth and comfort. The combination of healthcare excellence, community investment, and human-centered design positions the Pathways Hospice Inpatient Care Center as a new benchmark for hospice care in Northern Colorado.
